CS22 - Ferralium 255-SD50 - Submarine Fasteners

Ferralium 255-SD50

Langley Alloys supplied Ferralium® 255-SD50 as 2 1/4" diameter bar to Comefor for specialist fasteners used in assembling the latest French submarines. Ferralium® was chosen for its superior corrosion resistance combined with higher mechanical properties than other super duplex stainless steels.

Comefor, part of the Defence business unit of the WEARE Group, designs and manufactures critical mechanical systems using a range of high-precision machining and additive manufacturing. Recent investment in the latest 5-axis machining centres complements its turning, milling, grinding and LBM capabilities. The company has more than 40 years' experience on demanding projects across nuclear, oil and gas, aerospace and space, large capital goods and power generation, with some of its most exacting work in defence and naval applications.

Langley Alloys has a long history of supplying naval applications, where the combination of high strength and high corrosion resistance is particularly suited to submarine production by a number of the world's largest navies. Ferralium® 255 has previously been used in propeller shafts and propellers, mechanical shaft seals and fasteners.

Hiduron® 130 (and previously Marinel 220) is also widely specified for submarine dive-plane shafts, drive bushes and bearings, sonar equipment, and tow and winch components. Our unique copper alloys also provide excellent resistance to galling and bio-fouling, as well as avoiding the effects of hydrogen embrittlement.
