A Masoneilan 12120 electronic level transmitter, manufactured almost entirely from Ferralium® 255, was one of several destined to handle seawater on an oil platform in the North Sea. Masoneilan Ltd has been at the forefront of process technology for over 100 years and supplies a wide range of process valves and ancillaries.
The alloy was selected for its excellent resistance to selective attack as well as general corrosion by seawater. Several forms of the alloy - wrought, static castings and centrifugal castings - are welded together to produce the equipment, demonstrating the versatility of Ferralium® 255 (UNS S32550, Alloy 255, DIN 1.4507, ASTM F61).
