These machined Ferralium® 255 pump shafts (UNS S32550, Alloy 255, DIN 1.4507, ASTM F61) are 5ft long x 2-inch diameter with a screwed muff coupling, for SPP multi-stage vertical turbine well pumps used for firefighting service on a North Sea oil platform.
A firefighting system on these platforms must resist the corrosive effects of sea water and stay reliable over long periods. Ferralium® 255 super duplex stainless steel, with its combination of high mechanical strength and outstanding corrosion resistance to sea water, is particularly suitable for highly stressed components such as pump shafts, and has been selected for many critical applications.
