This agitator, fabricated in 20mm hot rolled Ferralium® 255 super duplex stainless steel (UNS S32550, Alloy 255, DIN 1.4507, ASTM F61) by Turbo-Muller KG of Ottobrunn, near Munich, is one of seven for a phosphoric acid plant in Yugoslavia:
- Four are 2.3 metres in diameter and weigh 1 ton each
- Three are 2.7 metres in diameter and weigh 1.2 tons each
Phosphoric acid is extremely corrosive, so the high tensile carbon steel shafts of 200mm diameter on which the agitators are mounted are encased in 3.2mm Ferralium® 255 plate. This gives the shafts the same long-life potential as the agitators themselves in these tough conditions.
