Sonar and sensor hardware sits at the intersection of two hard requirements. It is immersed in or splashed by seawater.

And its magnetic signature has to stay low so it does not interfere with the very signals it is there to detect. That rules out most general purpose stainless steels and points to a small group of copper and nitrogen strengthened alloys.

Hiduron® 191 is specified for components in sonar devices and for submarine components generally, combining seawater corrosion resistance with a low magnetic signature and anti-galling behaviour on moving parts. Hiduron® 130 is used for sonar equipment and submarine control elements, virtually non-magnetic with excellent seawater and crevice corrosion resistance.

For sensor fixtures, mounts and fittings that are not the transducer itself, Fermonic® 50 gives a strong, fully non-magnetic austenitic grade that stays non-magnetic after machining. Hidurel® 5, with a magnetic permeability below 1.001 and excellent bearing behaviour, covers the moving and bearing parts within sensor assemblies.

Hiduron® 191 is a naval cupronickel meeting DEF STAN 02-835 and NES 835; Hiduron® 130 is equivalent to UNS C72400; Fermonic® 50 is UNS S20910, known elsewhere as Nitronic® 50 (Cleveland-Cliffs). Send us the component and its magnetic and corrosion requirements and we will confirm the grade.
