Marine propulsion runs in seawater for years at a time, so its components have to resist corrosion, fouling and galling while carrying high load, and on naval vessels do so with very low magnetic permeability.

We supply the high-strength cupronickel, super duplex and high-strength stainless bar that propulsion and steering components are machined from, from stock in the UK and USA.

Which alloy for a marine propeller or propulsion shaft?

Hiduron® 130 and Hiduron® 191 - high-strength cupronickels developed for naval and marine service, offering seawater corrosion resistance, anti-fouling behaviour, galling resistance and low magnetic permeability.

Alloy K-500 and super duplex where high shaft strength is the priority. Fermonic® 50 and Hidurel® 5 are also specified for propeller shafts, combining high strength with seawater corrosion resistance.

Which alloy for rudders and steering gear?

Ferralium® 255 - a super duplex stainless steel used for propellers and rudders, including rudder stocks, for its combination of high strength and seawater corrosion resistance.

Which alloy for naval and submarine running gear?

Hiduron® 191 - developed for submarine and surface-fleet use, with very low magnetic permeability and excellent sub-zero properties.

Which alloy for spindles and actuator components in seawater?

Hiduron® 130, combining seawater performance, galling resistance and low magnetic permeability.

Also known as

Hiduron® 130 meets DIN 2.1504 and DTD 900/4805 (also designated UNS C72400). Hiduron® 191 meets DEF STAN 02-835 and NES 835. Alloy K-500 is equivalent to UNS N05500, sold elsewhere as Monel® K-500, a trademark of Special Metals. Ferralium® 255 is the Langley Alloys trade name for the super duplex stainless steel UNS S32550, and Alloy 32760 is equivalent to UNS S32760, also known as Zeron 100®, a trademark of Rolled Alloys. Fermonic® 50 is also known as Nitronic® 50 or UNS S20910. Hidurel® 5 is a Copper-Silicon-Nickel alloy, UNS C64700.
