Ferralium® 255 studs and nuts were selected to anchor the Christchurch Bay Tower Project in 1975, under the direction of the National Maritime Institute. Set in concrete and left in the sea for 10 months, they showed no signs of corrosion afterwards.
Ferralium® 255 has been widely adopted as a bolting material for seawater applications connected with North Sea oil. Typical applications include hot-headed bolts for both shaft couplings and column pipes on lineshaft pumps.
In view of the corrosion problems associated with Alloy 316 and plated steel bolts, use of Ferralium® 255 bolts has expanded. It has been specified for large-diameter bolts, up to 4ft long, for naval applications in place of chromium-plated carbon steel.
