The price of super duplex stainless steel depends on the exact composition, the product form, the size, the inspection requirements and the mill producer. Hollow bars and seamless tubes cost more because of the additional production steps, while plates are less expensive thanks to their simpler production flow.

What drives the cost

Variable cost items include energy and wages, but the most significant one month to month is the cost of raw materials. Mill producers apply an alloy surcharge to reflect the current cost of chromium, nickel and other alloy additions, which vary with global demand and mining activity.

The alloy surcharge is reviewed and updated monthly. Nickel is the most expensive addition and drives most of the volatility.

For suppliers, further costs come from processing and from yield loss through swarf and offcuts.
