It defines the chemical composition, mechanical property and testing requirements for many different stainless grades, each with its own chemistry - it is not a single composition.
What does ASTM A240 cover?
ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials, and A240 is its "Standard Specification for Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet and Strip for Pressure Vessels and General Applications". It applies to flat product only, and for each grade it defines the chemical composition, mechanical property requirements and the sampling, testing and certification rules. Typical uses include pressure vessels along with architectural, building, construction and general applications.
Because A240 spans many stainless grades - austenitic, ferritic, duplex and more - there is no single "A240 composition"; the requirements depend on the specific grade ordered.
