History of 22Cr

The most popular specification is UNS S32205 (1.4462, F51). Its development can be traced back as far as the 1930s, when higher-performance grades of stainless steel were needed in the pulp and papermaking industry.

The original specification was described under the UNS S31803 caption. However, the chromium and molybdenum content, which define resistance to pitting corrosion, was set at the higher end of the specification to form UNS S32205. Over time, that higher-end specification has come to dominate commercial supply.
