Austenitic stainless steels are non-magnetic, whereas ferritic, duplex and martensitic stainless steels are all magnetic.
This is sometimes an important selection criterion. Sensors may be affected if a metal housing could become magnetised, couplings could be harder to separate, or tooling harder to use. Fermonic® 50 (1.3964, XM19, Nitronic® 50) is commonly used for such applications.
