TP024 - Study of Metal Corrosion in the STS (Space Shuttle) Launch Environment
Download PDF (opens in new tab)

This paper studies metal corrosion in the STS (Space Shuttle) launch environment at the NASA launch pad. Of the 19 metals reviewed, Ferralium® is bettered only by zirconium.

The environment is highly corrosive, partly because of its marine location, but chiefly because of the roughly 17 tonnes of hydrochloric acid produced each time the booster rockets fire.
