This paper was presented during the 'Tech Garage' sessions at OSEA2018 in Singapore (27-29 November 2018). It gives a non-technical audience an overview of high-performance alloys and their key performance criteria across a wide selection of stainless steels and nickel alloys.

After reviewing the favourable properties of nickel alloys, it moves to its main subject: stainless steels, and super duplex stainless steels in particular. It introduces how stainless steels developed and how they work, then surveys the different types of alloy and their properties at a high level.

Super duplex stainless steels are identified as a family that combines high strength and high corrosion resistance at a cost-effective price relative to the alternatives. The paper highlights the specific advantages of Ferralium® 255 over S32750 and S32760: increased yield strength and superior corrosion resistance through a self-healing mechanism attributed to its raised copper content.
