Ferralium® was selected for the internal support bars of the Statue of Liberty during its major refurbishment, replacing corroded ironwork behind the copper skin. This role was covered in an article published in Stainless Steel World News, December 2018.
Constructed in 1886, the statue was suffering badly from galvanic corrosion some 90 years later. The combination of different materials within the structure created almost perfect conditions for accelerated corrosion, and an extensive refurbishment was first mooted in the 1970s.
Following a lengthy review of suitable materials, Ferralium® was selected for the supporting bars onto which the outer copper form is mounted. Its similar thermal expansion coefficient and elasticity to the previously installed wrought iron components was helpful, along with minimal reaction to the copper cladding. Its significantly greater strength, and the ability to supply it as bars and bolts, meant it could be used throughout the project.
