CS72 - Hidurel 5 - General Applications

Hidurel® 5 is a precipitation hardening alloy of copper, nickel and silicon that combines high strength, excellent bearing properties and near-non-magnetic behaviour, making it widely useful in general engineering.

Properties

Hidurel® 5 (UNS C64711, DIN 2.0855, DTD 498) provides a conductivity of about 45% that of copper in both thermal and electrical applications. With a permeability of less than 1.001 it is virtually completely non-magnetic.

Its corrosion resistance to sea water and to general industrial and marine conditions is good, so it can be used across a very wide range of exposed applications without protection. Machining presents no major difficulties and an excellent surface finish is readily obtained. The alloy is also dimensionally very stable, which matters in some applications.

Typical applications

This unique combination of properties sees Hidurel® 5 used very widely in electrical, mechanical and marine applications, including:

  • Shrink rings in electric motors.
  • Resistance welding electrode holders.
  • Valve guides in high performance petrol engines.
  • Little end bushes in large diesel engines.
  • High tensile bolts.
