Langley HIDURAX 1 is used for the bushes in aircraft undercarriages, where most conventional bearing bronzes are inadequate because of their low strength.
Present-day airliners weigh some 100 tons on landing, and in certain cases much more. However skilful the landing, the loading on the undercarriage gear is very considerable - the initial shock applies zero to full loading in less than half a second, quite apart from braking stresses.
As in all highly stressed equipment, correct design and the careful choice of materials are the safeguards of reliability. HIDURAX 1 provides the strength that these heavily loaded bushes demand.
