Chieftain and Challenger tanks use Hiduron® 130 (DIN 2.1504, DTD900/4805, Hidurax Special) for several of the complex gears in the turret traverse and elevation gearboxes produced by The Davall Gear Company Ltd, chosen for its mechanical strength and hardness.
Our armed services rely heavily on the reliability of the materials in their fighting equipment, and on the effectiveness and safety this brings to their forces.
Hiduron® 130 is a complex cupronickel and one of the highest-strength copper alloys available. Alongside strength, its excellent wear resistance and anti-frictional properties make it an ideal choice for many gear applications.
As a cupronickel, the alloy has excellent resistance to corrosion by seawater and marine and industrial atmospheres, and is highly resistant to crevice corrosion. Major uses are in naval applications, where very low magnetic permeability is often required, in marine engineering generally, in bearing applications, and in high-performance internal combustion engines for valve seat inserts and thrust washers.
