ASTM A479 is the American Society for Testing and Materials' "Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes for use in Boilers and Other Pressure Vessels". It defines the composition and mechanical property requirements for stainless steels supplied as bars - hot- or cold-finished, round, hexagonal or square - plus hot-rolled or extruded shapes such as angles, tees and channels.

Related: Duplex, Stainless Steel, Super Duplex

It also sets out sampling and certification requirements, product marking and grain size requirements.

What the specification covers

A479 gives tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness values for a number of heat treatments, with a special note on heat treatments and additional corrosion tests for the austenitic grades. Grades are also defined by their chemical composition.

Grades we supply under A479

We supply a wide range of higher-performance austenitic, duplex and super duplex stainless steels covered by A479, including:

  • UNS S20910 (XM-19, Nitronic® 50, Fermonic® 50, 1.3964)
  • UNS S31603 (Sanmac® 316, Alloy 316L, 1.4404)
  • UNS S31803 (Duplex 2205, 1.4462, F51)
  • UNS S32205 (Sanmac 2205, 1.4462, F60)
  • UNS S32750 (SAF2507, 1.4410, F53)
