What is ASTM A276?

ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials, and A276 is the ‘Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes.

This general specification for supply defines the composition and mechanical property requirements for a wide range of stainless steels when supplied as bars, whether hot- or cold-finished and whether round, hexagonal or square.

Various Kinds of ASTM A276

Langley Alloys supplies a wide range of higher performance austenitic stainless steels, duplex and super duplex stainless steels, all of which are included in the ASTM A276 specification. These include:

  • UNS S20910 (XM-19, Nitronic 50, Fermonic 50, 1.3964)
  • UNS S31603 (Sanmac 316, Alloy 316L, 1.4404)
  • UNS S31803 (Duplex 2205, 1.4462, F51)
  • UNS S32205 (Sanmac 2205, 1.4462, F60)
  • UNS S32750 (SAF2507, 1.4410, F53)
  • UNS S32760 (Zeron 100, 1.4501, F55)
  • UNS S32550 (Ferralium 255, 1.4507, F61)

The Scope of ASTM A276

The ASTM A276 specification is for hot-finished or cold-finished stainless-steel bars except for bars for reforging. This includes round squares, hexagons, and hot-rolled or extruded shapes such as angles, tees and channels that are commonly used types of stainless steel.

The bars will be furnished in one of the following conditions –

  • Condition A – The bars are annealed
  • Condition H – The bars are hardened and tempered at a relative temperature
  • Condition T – The bars are hardened and tempered at a relatively high temperature
  • Condition S – Bars are strain hardened or relatively light cold worked
  • Condition B – Stainless steel bars are relatively severe cold worked

The material will be subjected to a mechanical test which determines its tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and Brinell hardness.
