ASTM A276 is the American Society for Testing and Materials' "Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes". It defines the composition and mechanical property requirements for a wide range of stainless steels supplied as bars - hot- or cold-finished, and round, hexagonal or square.

Related: Duplex, Stainless Steel, Super Duplex

Scope of the specification

A276 covers hot- or cold-finished stainless steel bars, except bars for reforging. This includes rounds, squares and hexagons, and hot-rolled or extruded shapes such as angles, tees and channels.

Bars are furnished in one of the following conditions:

  • Condition A - annealed
  • Condition H - hardened and tempered
  • Condition T - hardened and tempered at a relatively high temperature
  • Condition S - strain hardened or lightly cold worked
  • Condition B - severely cold worked

The material is tested for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and Brinell hardness.
