Inconel 725 is the most expensive grade we stock, because it combines costly alloying elements with an additional strengthening heat treatment.
It is a nickel-based grade, primarily alloyed with chromium and with significant additions of molybdenum, niobium and titanium. Nickel is an expensive metal subject to price swings, and the other main alloying elements are all relatively costly too.
Its very high strength comes from precipitation-strengthening. During an additional heat treatment, very fine precipitates form throughout the metal and "pin" its microstructure under load, increasing strength and toughness. The time and energy of that extra process, and the challenge of reaching the required strengths, add further to the cost.
