DIN 1.4462 is a 22% chromium duplex stainless steel. Its equivalents are UNS S31803 (ASTM F51) and the tighter-controlled UNS S32205 (ASTM F60), commonly sold as Alloy 2205. S32205 meets both captions, so it can be dual-certified as S31803. Duplex offers about twice the strength and better corrosion resistance than 304/316 stainless.

Why does 1.4462 have two UNS numbers?
The grade was developed in the 1930s for pulp and paper manufacture, offering about twice the strength and much better corrosion resistance than general 304/316 stainless steels. Later, producers began working to the upper end of the allowable composition to maximise corrosion performance, helped by the AOD steelmaking process, which gave tighter control of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen.
To distinguish this top-of-range material, UNS S32205 (F60) was introduced. S32205 fully meets the older S31803 (F51) caption, but not the reverse, so S32205 can be dual-certified as S31803. Both still meet 1.4462. Its use has since broadened to marine applications, the food and chemical processing industries, and general engineering.
