Frequently asked questions
What is Fermonic, and who trademarks it?
Fermonic is Langley Alloys' trademarked range of austenitic stainless steel. Fermonic 50 (XM19, 1.3964, Nitronic 50) is Langley Alloys' version of the popular XM19 stainless steel, widely used for valve components such as stems, and in demanding marine applications requiring both strength and corrosion resistance.
What conditions is Fermonic 50 available in?
Fermonic 50 is available in two conditions: the standard solution-annealed grade and a high-strength version. Langley Alloys manufactures the high-strength version using proprietary conditions that achieve the increased strength consistently through the bar diameter, rather than only at the surface.
Why is Fermonic 50 popular for valve stems and marine use?
Fermonic 50 is widely used for valve components such as stems and in marine applications because it combines the toughness and fabrication ease of an austenitic stainless steel with notably higher strength than standard 3xx-series grades, without needing the higher alloy content of a duplex or super duplex grade.
