2.4668 is the Werkstoff number for the nickel-based alloy most commonly known as Inconel® 718, also designated UNS N07718 and Alloy 718. Werkstoff numbers were developed by the German standards body DIN; the word translates roughly as "material".
Inconel 718 was launched in 1962, initially for the aerospace industry. Its ready availability led the oil and gas industry to take it up as wells moved offshore and drilling went deeper, with higher temperatures, pressures and corrosive contaminants. The alloy uses precipitation treatment to achieve significantly increased strength while retaining much of the toughness (impact strength) and formability (elongation) of the base alloy.
