Sheet is thinner metal cut from a continuously rolled coil; plate is thicker metal rolled as a single item. The terms overlap, so some thicknesses can be produced either way, and both are supplied in the hot rolled condition.

Sheet

Sheet is cut from a continuously rolled coil. It can be less than 1mm, or up to 25mm, in thickness. It is typically used in producing appliances and enclosures.

Plate

Plate is rolled as a single item. Thickness can be up to 150mm or more, but also as low as 2mm from certain producers. It is typically used in machines, structural sections and larger fabrications.

Where they overlap

Because certain thicknesses fall within the range of both processes, the same item can be produced by either route and described differently.

We stock duplex and super duplex plate: 2205, 32750, 32760 and Ferralium® grades from 1/8" to 3" thick.
