What is corrosion, and what does it produce?
Corrosion is a chemical reaction that forms a corrosion product. In plain carbon steel, that product is widely recognised as rust. The specific appearance of the corrosion product depends on the metal involved and how resistant it is to the corrosive environment it is exposed to.
What does corrosion look like on a more corrosion-resistant alloy?
In a far more corrosion-resistant stainless steel, nickel or copper alloy, the corrosion product is likely to be less widespread and less prominent than on plain carbon steel, reflecting the alloy's greater resistance to the corrosive environment rather than complete immunity from attack.
Can stainless steel still show signs of rust?
Yes. Stainless steels still contain iron, so you will still see some red rust, even though the alloy is far more corrosion-resistant overall than plain carbon steel. The extent of rusting is a useful visual sign of how aggressively the environment is attacking the material.
