What is SAF2205?

SAF2205 is a tradename of Sandvik Materials Technology, for their 22Cr duplex stainless steel (S32205, DIN 1.4462, ASTM A182 F60).

SAF is an acronym of Sandvik Austenitic Ferritic, whilst 2205 is shorthand for the Unified Numbering System (UNS) designation S32205.

The History of Duplex Stainless Steels

Duplex stainless steels were developed in the 1930’s, for demanding applications in paper mills where lesser-alloyed grades were not sufficiently corrosion resistance. Based upon a 22% chromium content, they possess an optimised austenite: ferrite microstructure that provides increased strength, corrosion resistance and cost effectiveness. It is widely used in more general industrial applications, commonly for the production of pumps and valves where a standard austenitic stainless steel such as Alloy 316L has insufficient corrosion resistance.

Langley Alloys is the preferred distribution partner for Sandvik in the UK and USA for duplex and super duplex stainless steels, with our warehouses carrying a comprehensive stock of their products. We stock solid bars up to 450mm diameter, plate up to 3″ (76.2mm) thickness, plus a range of pipes, fittings and hollow bars.
