17-4 PH (UNS S17400)

17-4 PH is a high strength Martensitic stainless steel. Its main alloying components as a stainless steel are Chromium (17%) and Nickel (4%), but significant additions of Copper (typically 4%) have the potential to form highly dispersed particles following further ageing heat treatment, resulting in the precipitation strengthening mechanism.

Differing levels of heat treatment provide the option of supplying the grade in varying levels of strength and hardness. In the annealed condition, the grade is more readily machined and fabricated but can then be subject to a post-heat treatment to fully develop the desired mechanical properties.

Martensitic stainless steels are recognised for their excellent mechanical properties, namely their high strength and toughness, which are retained at temperatures of up to 316degC (600degF), supporting its use in Oil and Gas and chemical processing industries.
