What is S20910?

S20910 is the Unified Numbering System (UNS) designation for a more highly alloyed austenitic stainless steel, it is most commonly known as Nitronic 50. The UNS system was created by a number of trade groups working together in the 1970’s, to reduce confusion from the same alloy being called different things or vice-versa. Each metal is indicated by a letter followed by five numbers, where the letter indicates the family of metals, for instance, the ‘S’ stands for stainless steels.

Characteristics & Applications of Nitronic 50

Nitronic 50 is a higher-performance austenitic stainless steel that provides approximately twice the yield strength of regular 3xx series stainless steels and improved corrosion performance. Like some super duplex stainless steels, it also uses an increased nitrogen content to improve the strength, so is sometimes referred to as a nitrogen-strengthened alloy. Additions of manganese also push up the strength through solid solution strengthening. It is widely used in a variety of marine and industrial applications.

What Makes It Different To Alloy 316L?

Compared with Alloy 316L, it contains increased chromium and molybdenum additions which support the improved corrosion resistance. Whilst Alloy 316L would have a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of 25, the PREN of Nitronic 50 is 34. It is listed in NACE MR 0175 for sour service applications, given its ability to resist sulphide stress cracking. It is a registered trademark of AK Steel Corporation.
