Duplex, Super Duplex and Hyper Duplex have a combination of austenitic and ferritic microstructures, approximately 50:50. Duplex steels are attractive as they balance the most favourable properties of their austenitic and ferritic microstructures, namely high-strength, excellent corrosion resistance, relatively easy to fabricate and resistant to stress corrosion cracking. Compared with other types of stainless steel, and also some nickel alloys, duplex grades are highly cost-effective and so are widely used.
