CS119 – Ferralium 255 – Liquid Ring Gas Pumps

Description:

FERRALIUM 255 alloy has a long-established reputation as a super stainless steel having a considerably better performance in most corrosive environments than normal austenitic stainless steels, and one of its speciality applications is in the handling of the extremely corrosive and mechanically aggressive conditions encountered in the ‘wet’ process production of fertilizer grade phosphoric acid.

It is a further endorsement of its superiority, therefore, that Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz of Bochum, West Germany, chose FERRALIUM 255 alloy as the material of construction for 24 K-H-D liquid ring gas pumps supplied for use on fertiliser plants in the USSR.    Some 30 tons of FERRALIUM 255 super duplex stainless steel (UNS S32550, Alloy 255, DIN 1.4507, ASTM F61) were supplied to the West German pump manufacturer, both as castings weighing up to 370lb each, and as wrought bar and plate material.

Shown here is one of the pump castings and twelve impellers, the latter exemplifying the versatility and workability of FERRALIUM 255 where components of a complex design can be fabricated of both cast and wrought material by entirely traditional techniques. The liquid ring gas pump has a wide range of applications and, inherent in its design, are reliability, long service life and low maintenance costs, since there is no sliding friction between critical metal parts.
