CS113 – Ferralium 255 – Compressors

Description:

Stress corrosion cracking is always a potential problem where high mechanical stress and severely corrosive conditions are both present. However, Ferralium 255 is a good material choice due to its higher strength and duplex microstructure.

These FERRALIUM 255 alloy forgings, seen being tolerance checked between machining operations at Langley, are 24” in diameter with sections of up to 5 ½ “, weigh approximately 400 lb each, and after fine balancing, will operate at 15,00rpm. They will be used in compressors handling hot gases containing hydrogen disulphide and sulphur dioxide in an overseas Petro-chemical complex. Because of FERRALIUM 255 (UNS S32550, Alloy 255, DIN 1.4507, ASTM F61) particularly high resistance to stress corrosion cracking it was chosen to replace failed sets of forgings made in ordinary ferritic stainless steel.
