TP044 – Influence of copper and tungsten addition on the passivity and pitting resistance of super duplex stainless steel

TP044 – Influence of copper and tungsten addition on the passivity and pitting resistance of super duplex stainless steel

Description:

This paper explores the improvements possible in super duplex stainless steel pitting corrosion resistance through the controlled additions of Copper (Cu) and tungsten (W). Immersion in NaCl solution for extended periods is shown to result in a thicker passive layer for the alloy with a higher copper content (Ferralium 255 meets the general caption of S32550/2507Cu). Further electrochemical studies demonstrate the benefit of higher Cu additions in resisting crevice corrosion in more aggressive solutions.
