Applications for Ferralium 255 super duplex stainless steel in sea water have confirmed the early promise of laboratory tests. Perhaps the most notable of these is the remarkable condition of a cast propeller (see illustration) after four years’ continuous immersion in sea water. This propeller was found to be completely free from general attack or pitting and the latter is particularly significant since a large part of this time immersed in sea water was under static conditions. The dark marks to be seen in the photograph are adherent growths and underneath many of these which have been removed, a bright clean surface is exposed.
