Langley have recently supplied a forged shaft of 5” diameter and 14 feet long in their stainless-steel alloy, Ferralium 255, for a phosphoric acid plant to be erected overseas. When machined and fitted with a paddle, this shaft will be used in a mixer in making ‘wet process’ acid.
Ferralium 255 (UNS S32550, Alloy 255, DIN 1.4507, ASTM F61) is a ferritic-austenitic super duplex stainless steel which combines high strength, hardness, and ductility with outstanding corrosion resistance, and it is finding extensive application in the handling of such acids as sulphuric, phosphoric, nitric, acetic, formic, and many others, and in the handling of salt solutions.
