2205 is a machinability-improved version of duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel, engineered to offer significantly better performance during machining compared to standard 2205 grades and other duplex alloys. Enhanced tool life and the ability to operate at higher cutting speeds make 2205 a cost-effective choice for applications involving extensive machining.
Thanks to its excellent corrosion resistance, 2205 is well-suited for use in aggressive environments containing chlorides and hydrogen sulfide. It is widely used in oil and gas extraction from sour wells, refinery operations, and process systems where chloride contamination is a concern.
The alloy is especially effective in heat exchangers where chloride-bearing or brackish water is used as the cooling medium. It also performs reliably in dilute sulfuric acid environments and is resistant to organic acids, including acetic acid and related mixtures.
With its high strength and excellent mechanical properties, 2205 offers a robust alternative to austenitic stainless steels in load-bearing structures. Its strength, combined with superior corrosion resistance, contributes to longer service life and lower life cycle costs for a wide range of industrial equipment.
Note: For applications requiring certified machinability enhancements, Sanmac® 2205 (a registered trademark of Sandvik Intellectual Property AB) may be specified.
