Positive Material Identification (PMI)

Traceability of material is a fundamental requirement when supplying high-performance products to demanding applications. Langley Alloys ensures through-process retention of production details and product properties through a combination of hard stamps, dimensional checks, colour coding and labelling, plus Positive Material Identification (PMI).

PMI is shorthand for the checking of a metal’s composition using a non-destructive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. These versatile items of handheld equipment will determine the composition of a metal sample in-situ in less than one minute. By scanning each batch of metal that enters our warehouse, it provides an additional check before booking it in to stock and making it available for sale. In addition, we undertake a robust sampling procedure for all incoming materials. A statistically relevant number of samples will be taken and sent for repeat testing as an additional layer of checks.
