Unique Alloys

Langley Alloys are able to offer a number of unique alloys to the market. We were founded in 1938 from the special copper alloys division of High Duty Alloys, and developed into a fully integrated metal production company on a site at Langley in west London.

From there we were able to develop, patent and trademark of host of innovative alloys that led the way for for high-strength copper alloys and super duplex stainless steels.

Our first significant development was the high-strength copper-nickel naval alloy Hidurax Special. Now known as Hiduron 130, it continues to provide an attractive combination of physical and mechanical properties for demanding subsea applications in the marine and Oil & Gas markets. Our initial expertise in copper-based alloys also led to the development of Hidurel 5, a bearing alloy used on the original Spitfire and still specified by Rolls-Royce to this day.

Langley Alloys is most-widely recognised for our focus on super duplex stainless steels. We invented the original super duplex, Ferralium 255, which is still the only super duplex to provide >85ksi yield strength. Increased copper additions result in superior pitting corrosion resistance and performance in chloride-containing environments and selected acids. The latest variant, Ferralium 255-SD50, is supplied with much lower levels of impurities (sulphur and phosphorus) to limit the presence of inclusions, and a balanced microstructure to optimise both mechanical and corrosion properties. Ferralium has been widely used in the most demanding applications, from Oil and Gas, through marine, mining, desalination and flue gas desulphurisation. It was even used in the refurbishment of the Statue of Liberty!

Fermonic 50 is Langley Alloys version of the ‘XM-19’ austenitic stainless steel. We are able to offer a higher-strength variant from ¾” up to 8” diameter, with more consistent properties than competitors alloys, through a combination of processes undertaken to our unique specification.
