Machining Ferralium 255-SD50 with Coromant Tooling

Ferralium 255

Langley Alloys was recently approached regarding machining guidelines for Ferralium 255-SD50 by a Portuguese customer.

As this high-strength super duplex stainless steel has been widely used for many years, machinists have developed appropriate ‘feed and speed’ settings to handle this alloy, and we also publish guidelines in all our product datasheets. However, for this particular project, the client was keen to utilise the best available guidance and tooling.

After reviewing the product brochure for Ferralium 255-SD50, the local Coromant Engineer suggested using the CoroTurn Prime system (CoroTurn Prime Tip B / CP-25BL-2525-11) together with a specific tip for the customers requirement (CoroTurn Prime Type B Insert – CP-25BL-2525-11, Geometry H3 ISO S). The following settings were also recommended:

  • VC = 100m/min
  • FZ = 1.00mm/rpm
  • AP = 1.5mm
  • Life = 15min
  • Observations = no chip breakage

As shown by the image, the project was successfully completed. Both Langley Alloys and Coromant hope it is the first of many further projects with this particular customer.

For more information about Ferralium 255-SD50 or to discuss your own individual requirements, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Langley Alloys team today.
