What is ASTM A240?

ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials, and A240 is the ‘Standard Specification for Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet and Strip for Pressure Vessels and General Applications’. This general specification for supply defines the composition and mechanical property requirements for a wide range of stainless steels when supplied as plate, sheet and strip. Typical applications would include architectural, building, construction, aesthetic and general use. It also includes basic details for sampling and certification requirements.

What is the Chemical Composition of A240?

Stainless steel grade A240’s chemical composition is made up as follows –

  • Chromium – 18%
  • Titanium + Niobium – 0.6%
  • Carbon – 0.02%
  • Iron – Remainder of element content
