TP024 – Study of Metal Corrosion in the STS (Space Shuttle) Launch Environment

Description:

This paper explores the rather unusual application of metals used in the NASA ‘Space Shuttle’ launch pad area. Of the 19 metals reviewed, Ferralium® is only bettered by Zirconium. The environment considered is deemed highly corrosive, in part from its marine location, but primarily to the production of c. 17T of hydrochloric acid each time the booster rockets are utilised.
